A cancelled India vs Pakistan clash, active keyboard warriors from both sides, and organisers in a limbo.. that is what’s left of the WCL 2025, which had the ambitious idea of bringing the legends of both the countries on the park, together, or rather against each other. And that dream did not fructify, after the Indian legends agitated against the encounter quite late — reportedly, including the likes of Harbhajan Singh, Shikhar Dhawan, Irfan Pathan and Yusuf Pathan.

IND vs PAK Match Hits Roadblock

Dhawan went to the extent of issuing a statement, that read, “This is to formally reiterate and confirm that Mr. Shikhar Dhawan will not be participating in any matches against the Pakistan team in the upcoming WCL League. This decision was communicated earlier during our discussion on call and WhatsApp dated 11th May 2025.”

An apologetic statement came from the organisers too. But where does this cancelled IND vs PAK match leave us? Yes, the political tensions are high, but then sporting events between the two nations continue to happen. Just a few days back — the U16 volleyball teams played a semifinal at the Asian Championships, and India is gearing up to host the Hockey Asia Cup, followed by the Junior World Cup. Pakistan is slated to participate there too.

Government Ready, But Still Lack of Clarity

What adds to the confusion is — Mansukh Mandaviya has already clarified that IND vs PAK will continue to happen at multi-team events, but no bilateral matches, strictly. The sports minister had said, “”no problem playing Pakistan in international tournaments where multiple countries are involved.”

That just further puts IND vs PAK further in jeopardy, for the Asia Cup, that is now supposed to take place in UAE, from September 5. The ACC still doesn’t know if the tournament is happening or not, let alone the arch-rivals facing each other. One just wonders, if the proposed match does go forward, will it suffer the same fate as the WCL 2025 one? Just like a lot of other unanswered questions, this one shall remain that way too.
